I ordered it because of the “step by step” title. The book goes right into the complex technology of Word and evades the do- thisdo thatapproach that could get you to producing a document with all the size- color-font-spacing etc.
Im sure it has all the info anyone could wantbut “step -by step” forget it. Harvey Hellering. Finished this book in about 2 weeks and learned a lot about Word I highly recommend downloading the practice files as they reinforce what’s covered in each chapter. Chapters are only a few pages long and the majority of text is given over to step by step lists which can be tedious to read but makes it a great reference book after completion.
Having Word running helped a lot too. I would read and understand the steps them immediately switch to an open document in Word and perform the instructions. It has all the makings of a book that will be very helpful! It did not meet my expectations. I was unable to download the practice files. The book was not clear enough to follow. One person found this helpful. While the book has good content, it is poorly written. Be prepared to have google open while reading. Example: On page it references AutoCorrect but it doesn’t tell you how to get to this feature.
I expected more. If you are looking for a manual with more advanced information then this book is not for you. Very good for a beginner. Have used others in the series.
I have used the Step by Step books for about ten years for facilitation of various community college classes. I have always LOVED these books and sworn by them as the best for in person training for the best price. Unfortunately, that has all changed with the series.
They used to introduce a topic and then have you practice, introduce a topic and practice, etc. They are now pretty much user guides with a VERY short practice exercise section at the end of each chapter. The books will probably be somewhat usable for someone who is teaching themselves an application, but they are now useless in a classroom environment.
Such a query would lead down a rabbit hole. So, there has to be an online manual of chapters, lists, categories, subchapters that address various issues and by glancing through such a list we can explore the capabilities of the software instead of just limiting ourselves to what we see others doing! So, that is a MAJOR shortcoming of most softwares today and I’m very disappointed if MS does not have such a resource, at least online, for a users to rely on!
Good programs have such resources available for those who seek them! I understand it takes some effort to organize such a “book” but I believe it is an obligation of MS to do it. Microsoft itself has tutorials online. Word Bible: Herb Tyson: Amazon. There is not that much new in recent versions for the ordinary user.
For corporate users there is a bunch of geegaws. Yes it is a cop out, but not by Doug. MS copped out on producing documentation for all Office applications long ago. What you are looking for was known as a “User Guide”. If it is not the last one, it is one of the last versions. Since MS abdicated it’s responsibility to document it’s programs it has depended on external experts to write the user guides. Go to any large bookstore and you’ll see a dozen or more titles for Word alone.
From relatively short “idiot” level books like the “For Dummies Spend some time browsing in a book store and pick one or two. Designed to help you practice and prepare for the Word Microsoft Office Specialist MOS exam, this all-in-one study guide features: Full, objective-by-objective exam coverage; Easy-to-follow procedures and illustrations to review essential skills; Hands-on practice tasks to apply what you’ve learned; files included; Online pre-test to assess your readiness.
Use the in-depth exam prep, practice, and review to help advance your proficiency with Microsoft Office – and earn the credential that proves it! There are a couple of simple realities to consider when buying “User Guides” for Office programs. First, programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint are incredibly complex. Years ago I saw articles documenting that these programs have each have over commands!
The combinations and permutations and nuances of these commands simply incredible. Frankly, MS does not have the imagination to get the most out of their own programs. When you read what people have been able to do, the subtleties they have created you’ll be amazed.
Second, change in these programs is very slow “evolutionary” rather than “revolutionary”. Some new commands are “bolted on” with each release, and sometimes a few old ones are retired. Even the switch from the superior menu to the “ribbon” was simply a case of “putting lipstick on the pig”. They changed the “shell” that accessed the underlying commands, but This means that if you get a good, detailed book for or even or earlier!
Then you just have to look up online articles detailing “what’s new” in each subsequent release. With that info you can lookup detailed online articles about any of the new features that interest you.
I’ve been using Word since 91 and every week I still learn something new about it. When you try this, you’ll find that the AppData folder and everything under it is marked in Windows as Hidden. There are two ways to get to the desired folder:. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help.
